The FBI wants to monitor Facebook and Instagram in real time for domestic threats. The FBI is searching for contractors who can gather and feed content streams in real-time to the Bureau from social platforms. The FBI confirmed that it is seeking bids for a service that provides “real-time access to a full range of social media exchanges” to better fight terrorist groups and domestic threats. Specifically, they want a partner who can give law enforcement advance warning of violent incidences and serve up individual users’ id, IP addresses, and telephone numbers. Civil liberties groups were quick to act, pointing out the opportunity for abuse and inherent likelihood of a system like this disproportionately harm immigrants, communities of color, and activists.
