Facebook has millions to invest in publishers willing to return to the platform

Facebook has millions to invest in publishers willing to return to the platform. Facebook is reaching out to big name news publishers with offers to spend big on the right to republish news stories and other content. Insiders say Facebook is offering up to $3 million annually for licensing rights. Publishers engaged include ABC News, Bloomberg, Dow Jones, and the Washington Post. This content is destined for a dedicated news tab in the main Facebook app, scheduled to be released this fall. Facebook insists publishers would get a good deal - three year deals, control of how articles appear on Facebook, and the amount of content presented before users click through to the source article. Publishers are wary, after getting burnt the last time Facebook turned up exposure to their content in the News Feed, and then reversed its position all but killing traffic and associated revenue. Analysts suggest Facebook’s move is a strategic response to its issue with fake new by providing reliable, credible, diverse news at scale. The Verge
