As Facebook, Apple, and Amazon get more government scrutiny, Microsoft quietly became the largest software company in the world

As Facebook, Apple, and Amazon drew government scrutiny, Microsoft quietly became the largest software company in the world. The US Justice Department announced an anti-trust review in late July to investigate Facebook, Amazon, and Apple to determine whether they were using their market dominance to stifle competition. Interestingly, Microsoft, now the largest software company and the company with the largest market cap in any sector, for that matter, has entirely escaped governmental scrutiny. How is that? Experts say Microsoft owns a dominant position over PC operating systems (on 87% of systems) but Windows is no longer viewed as an important tech influencing technology or product. That is, it doesn’t really play a major role in bringing or holding consumers and businesses close to Microsoft given the shift to the Internet. Computerworld
