TikTok is one year old - here's the recap on how it got to 1.27B downloads so quickly. It started with hashtag challenges - users, mostly kids at the beginning - danced or lip-synched to 15-second music clips. In the months that followed one challenge after another boosted user growth. Top favorites included #PoseChallenge, #ReactToThis, #OctoberMood, #PretendInstrument, #CreateForACause (TikTok donated $2 million to charities for videos submitted with the hashtag), and many others. TikTok is big in the U.S. but its largest audiences are outside America with India and China leading the way. During this rapid growth phase, the platform also managed to add an advertising platform, fundamentally reshape the music industry and launching new stars, wrestle with content moderation and data privacy, deal with government intervention in India, the UK and the US, and pay a $5.7 million fine imposed by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission for illegally collecting data on children. TikTok users haven’t lost their sense of humor - July’s trending hashtag is #Area51 - uploads promoting the raid on famed Area 51 to break out the aliens. The Verge
