Facebook is open-sourcing its algorithms to detect child sexual exploitation

Facebook is open-sourcing its algorithms to detect child sexual exploitation. Its video and photo-matching technology compares user uploaded content with known examples of harmful content. The specific algorithms, known as PDQ and TMK+PDQF, are used to detect content containing child sexual exploitation, terrorist propaganda, and graphic violence. The move to open-source the software allows nonprofits, other software companies, and developers to use the technology to identify harmful content and add it to the shared database. This in turn helps everyone using the software to more quickly identify harmful content. The Verge
