China's largest state-run news agency is buying Facebook and Twitter ads to smear protesters

China's largest state-run news agency is buying Facebook and Twitter ads to smear protesters. The goal is to influence how the pro-democracy protesters are viewed by the world. Roughly one-quarter of Hong Kong’s population or 1.7 million people marched on the streets of Hong Kong Sunday to denounce Beijing’s attempts to interfere in the semi-autonomous territory. But China is stepping up pressure by amassing soldiers just across the border, boosting unpaid content on social sites like YouTube, and paid ads on Facebook and Twitter. Xinhua News is running five ads on Facebook, with one aimed at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (she’s criticized the Chinese government), demanding she fly to Hong Kong to see the true facts. Another Facebook ad claims Hong Kong’s economy is suffering because of the protests and says the public wants someone “to restore order.” Gizmodo
