Facebook had human contractors listening to private conversations on Messenger. Until one week ago, Facebook was using hired contractors to listen to audio of user’s private conversations, specifically the audio-to-text transcription feature in Messenger. Facebook said it was using humans to validate or make corrections to the text produced by its automated machine learning algorithms. It’s a common technique to improve the speech-to-text algorithms - feeding back where it is getting it wrong. Unfortunately, the process involves having humans listen to private conversations of Messenger users. Facebook reversed its decision to use humans last week, after it learned Google and Apple stopped using human reviewers. Forbes
