The Knight Foundation invests $50 million to understand fake news' impact on democracy

The Knight Foundation invests $50 million to understand fake news' impact on democracy. The foundation, known for its close ties to the news industry, announced it would fund work at 11 universities. The work will look at what happens in a democracy over the long haul if it doesn’t have reliable news and information, and in the short term, provide tools to analyze social media and study new regulation options to “ensure democracy survives the Internet.” The work combines the computational sciences, social sciences, and the humanities, and looks to step in as a valuable additional contributor to the fake news debate taking place today between tech companies and politicians.
