In today's edition of <ALL THINGS> Social:
Twitter announces Issue Ads Policy and certification process. The policy directly impacts nonprofit advocacy and political groups, as Twitter says it applies to "ads that refer to an election or a clearly identified candidate," and "ads that advocate for legislative issues of national importance." Advertisers who deploy ads in these categories must be certified (apply here), but news organizations are exempt though they must apply for exemption here. Issue ads (like political ads) will be clearly labeled within the timeline with the "Promoted (Issue) / Paid for by" label, and link to more details about the advertiser. The issue ads will be included in the Ads Transparency Center, where Twitter will provide the same level of detail as political ads. The new policy will be enforced starting September 30, 2018.
